Walsall Defender Ryan Leak Returns to Training After Groin Injury

Walsall defender Ryan Leak has returned to training after a groin injury, but will be monitored ahead of the League Two opener against Gillingham. The 28-year-old captained the team on his first competitive start, but was forced off with a groin issue during the Saddlers' 1-0 victory at Bristol City in the Carabao Cup last week.

Lee Grant, the Walsall head coach, has confirmed that Leak has returned to training, but the coaching and medical staff will continue to monitor his progress heading towards the weekend.

"[Ryan] is back with his boots on, running around with the lads and training today, but that doesn’t mean that we’re guaranteed for no reaction tomorrow, or a positive outcome," Grant said.

"We’ve got to be careful with everybody because we put such a huge effort into Thursday. But I do think we’ve had enough time now - Ryan and everybody included - to make sure we’re in a good place for this weekend."

Walsall are currently without Alex Pattison until possibly early October due to a hamstring injury, while Harry Williams (Achilles) is a long-term absentee.

What Comes Next?

The Saddlers will face Gillingham in their League Two opener on Saturday, and Grant will be keeping a close eye on Leak's progress in the lead-up to the match.

Why It Matters for Walsall

Walsall's injury situation is a concern ahead of the new season, with several key players missing through injury. Leak's return to training is a welcome boost, but the coaching staff will need to be cautious not to rush him back too quickly.

Next Fixture

Walsall's next fixture is against Barnet on 2027-02-27, where they will look to build on their strong start to the season.
