Walsall have added six players this summer under Lee Grant, but the Saddlers boss insists there’s still work to do before the new League Two season kicks off. The club currently sits 13th in League Two with 65 points from 46 games and a goal difference of zero after conceding 56 and scoring 56.

What’s already done?

Six new faces have arrived at the Bescot Stadium so far. Jed Ward, James Connolly, Sven Sprangler, Lewis Simper and Andrew Dallas joined permanently, while Isaac Moore arrived on a season-long loan from Coventry City. All bar Connolly featured in Walsall’s pre-season opener at Leamington on Saturday, which ended 0-0.

Ward, 23, arrived from Bristol Rovers on a three-year deal with a 12-month option. His arrival suggests he’ll be Grant’s first-choice goalkeeper, pushing academy product Jenson Kilroy towards a loan move. Grant brought in a trialist goalkeeper in the second half against Leamington, underlining his intent to bolster the department further.

Dallas led the line in the first half and nearly scored before his goal was ruled out for offside. Aaron Pressley will hope to impress after a tough debut campaign last term, but Walsall still need more attacking options. The club has a history of late summer signings like Daniel Kanu and Nathan Lowe, so patience may be required.

Where are the gaps?

Defensively, Walsall are thin. James Connolly arrived from Crewe Alexandra, but the club lost Aden Flint, Evan Weir and Priestley Farquharson in the close season. Kacper Lopata’s loan also ended, leaving just Rico Browne and a couple of trialists in central defence. Grant handed Browne a new long-term deal, but at least two more defenders look likely before the window slams shut.

Full-backs aren’t Grant’s top priority. Connor Barrett left for Wigan Athletic, but Browne and Elicha Ahui played against Leamington, with Mason Hancock and Vincent Harper competing on the left. Ahui’s 10-month absence from an ACL injury remains a question mark, so the Saddlers may focus elsewhere first.

Who’s still missing?

Albert Adomah, 38, showed flashes on the right wing under interim boss Darren Byfield, but he can’t be a regular starter. Courtney Clarke impressed on the left, yet Walsall still need more creativity and goals. With the transfer window still open, Grant could yet add another permanent attacker or bring in a loanee when the market heats up.

Walsall sit 22 points behind Bromley in the title race and have lost their last four matches, including a 3-1 defeat to Bromley on May 2, 2026. The Saddlers need to steady the ship fast if they’re to climb away from the lower reaches of League Two.
