Walsall has signed James Connolly, a defender from Crewe Alexandra, as their fourth summer signing. Connolly has revealed Lee Grant's ambition was a major factor in his decision to join Walsall.

What drew Connolly to Walsall?

The defender has signed a two-year deal at the Poundland Bescot Stadium, with the option of a third year in the club’s favour. He helped Bristol Rovers secure promotion from League Two in 2022 and is hoping for more success with his new club.

Connolly's expectations

“I’m buzzing to get it done and I’m hoping for some good seasons together,” said Connolly. He outlined what Walsall supporters can expect from him, saying he is a defender who wants to keep the ball out of the net.

Grant's delight

Lee Grant expressed his delight at strengthening his defensive options, saying Connolly is a defender who does the simple work well and leads by example. The new Saddlers head coach believes Connolly will integrate and develop well under his guidance.

As of the end of the 2025-2026 season, Walsall stands 13th in League Two, with 65 points from 46 games, having scored 56 goals and conceded 56. Their recent form has been LLWLL, with their last result being a 3-1 loss to Bromley on 2026-05-02.
