Clarke’s late surge
Courtney Clarke entered Walsall’s League Two opener at Gillingham in the 69th minute and immediately changed the game’s rhythm. He recorded five shots, the joint-most for the match, and 17 touches inside the Gillingham penalty area, a testament to his intensity after coming on.
Goals for the Gills
Clarke’s first contribution came in the opening goal. He intercepted a ball near his own box, launched a counter-attack and set up Isaac Moore’s opener. The midfielder’s finish gave Walsall a 1-0 lead.
The second goal
In the second, Clarke slipped past his marker, chopped inside and fired a shot that ricocheted off the post. James Connolly tapped the rebound to seal the 2-0 scoreline.
The third goal
Clarke’s final touch of the night was a pinpoint cross to the back post. Aaron Pressley’s header was saved, but Moore tucked the follow-up to make it 3-0. The cross also forced a smart save from Gillingham’s emergency loan keeper, Ashley Maynard-Brewer.
Bench impact
Clarke was not the only substitute to influence the match. Isaac Moore, Roman Dixon, Tai Sodje and Harrison Burke all contributed from the bench, giving manager Lee Grant a selection headache ahead of the first home game against Grimsby Town.
A new role
Last season, Clarke made 28 of 53 appearances from the bench, often playing as a No 8 in Mat Sadler’s 3-5-2 or as a wing-back. Under former interim head coach Darren Byfield he transitioned into a winger, a position that appears best suited to his pace and guile in Grant’s system.
Looking ahead
Clarke’s cameo suggests he could reach an entirely new level this season. He now has a full campaign in the EFL to learn from and improve upon, with a regular starting place a realistic goal if he maintains this form.
