Walsall FC have completed the signing of James Furlong on a one-year contract deal. The 24-year-old forward arrives at the club to provide additional options for Lee Grant as they navigate the season at the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium. The Saddlers currently sit 3rd in League Two with 4 pts, 1W-1D-0L from 2 games, with a recent form of DW.
Furlong, born in Dublin, brings a wealth of international experience to the frontline. He has represented the Republic of Ireland at the U16, U17, U18, and U21 levels. His senior career began in April 2019 during a match against Dundalk. Since then, he has moved through several notable clubs, including St. Joseph’s Boys, Bray Wanderers, Shamrock Rovers, and Brighton & Hove Albion.
The new recruit made his first-team debut for Brighton & Hove Albion in August 2022. Following that stint, he moved to Motherwell on loan in January 2023, where he made 16 appearances. In September 2023, Hull City acquired him for an undisclosed fee, though he eventually left the club in February 2024 to join AFC Wimbledon on loan. Furlong notably made 30 appearances for AFC Wimbledon, helping the club secure promotion to Sky Bet League One via the play-offs.
Most recently, Furlong spent time abroad with NK Maribor on a short-term deal before departing in the summer. The move to Walsall is now subject to standard EFL, FA, and international clearance.
"It's unbelievable (to sign)" James Furlong said regarding the move. Lee Grant added, "I'm pleased to add James to our ranks."
With 3 goals scored and 0 conceded this season, Walsall have enjoyed a strong start to the campaign. They are currently 2 points behind leaders Barnet in the title race.
