Walsall have secured the signing of Lewis Simper this summer, with the midfielder revealing that former Saddlers star Tom Knowles played a key role in his decision to join the club.
How did Tom Knowles influence Simper’s move?
Simper, who spent two seasons at Sutton United, cited Knowles’ positive experience at Walsall as a major factor. The pair previously played together at Cambridge United and Yeovil Town, and Knowles’ seven goals and 10 assists in 92 appearances for Walsall between 2022 and 2024 left a lasting impression. “I know Tom Knowles, who was here a few years ago, and he only had great things to say about the club,” Simper said. “Once I spoke to him, it was an easy decision to make.”
What convinced Simper Walsall was the right choice?
A Zoom call with manager Stewart Mairs in early June sealed the deal for Simper. He was drawn to the club’s ambition and the manager’s style of play. “Just the size of the club and the fact that we have a gaffer that plays the right way,” he explained.
