Harrison Burke is determined to make the most of his opportunity at Walsall after a journey that began in non-league football. The 24-year-old defender, who joined the Saddlers from Chester, says playing professionally is the realisation of a lifelong ambition.
Burke's formative years were spent outside the EFL system, where he developed a reputation as a goal-scoring centre-half. His final season at Chester in the National League North yielded 12 goals in 48 games across all competitions, a record that caught Walsall's eye. A long-term knee injury disrupted his first campaign at the Poundland Bescot Stadium, but he still managed two goals in 24 appearances.
Living the dream
"Just being in full-time football - that's my biggest highlight," Burke said. "It's something that I said when I joined, it's always been a dream to do."
He has started just once in League Two this season under manager Lee Grant, captaining the side and scoring in a 3-2 home win over Accrington Stanley in late August. That experience has only fuelled his desire to establish himself.
Perspective from the lower levels
Having never been part of a Category One academy, Burke brings a different perspective to the professional environment. He appreciates the facilities and the chance he has been given.
"I look out here and I see two unbelievable pitches," he continued. "I think I've never had this before and I'm so lucky to be where I am."
His aim is now to help drive Walsall forward. "I want to get this club to where it should be and hopefully I can go with the club and get to that level as well," Burke added. The defender's commitment is clear as he looks to build on his 24 appearances for the club. Fans can follow the team's progress in the standings as the season develops. Burke's next chance to feature could come in Walsall's upcoming match, with the full schedule available on the fixtures page.
